Providential Beginnings

Providence is God’s timely preparation for future eventualities. When I look back on my life prior to my preliminary Multiple Myeloma diagnosis, I can see how God was moving in my life to prepare me and my circumstances for what lay ahead. I recognize that God had been orchestrating the circumstances of my life from the very beginning to prepare me for that moment.

I did not recognize that I was beginning an unplanned journey when Vanessa and I went to see my family doctor about a series of unusual tests for an already diagnosed injury. Nonetheless, I found myself entering into a health crisis that (as all crises do) immediately challenged my faith.

Through the providence of God, my faith was and still is, rooted in His wisdom and the knowledge of the truth that God’s plans for me are for my welfare and not for my calamity; but rather to give me a future and a hope.

The foundational scripture for me concerning my providential beginnings is Romans 8:28:

“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.”

Beginnings are not always easily recognized as such, especially when not planned. But planned or not, they all share one thing in common; they all require faith (in something or someone) to move forward. The beginning of this journey was no different. It called forth my faith in the providence of God rather than reasoning or my intellect or wisdom. As long as I listened for His voice and followed where He led me, I stayed safe in His arms.

Looking back, I can plainly see that providence, God’s timely preparation for future eventualities, was most assuredly there at the beginning of my Multiple Myeloma journey. None of the events in my life are a surprise to Him; He has been a lamp to my path from before I was born. He was there in the beginning (Genesis 1:1) and will always be there at all of our beginnings.
